Virtual Freedom
Logline: Part animation, part documentary, VIRTUAL FREEDOM is an innovative portrayal of contemporary Burma via the internet, as seen through the eyes of charismatic Burmese exile, animator, chef and political activist, Maung Maung Aye.
Synopsis: Cooking, animation and politics – a Burmese love story online – this is an intimate ‘documation’ about a unique online relationship that transcends not only the latest methods of communication, but also the shackles of a cruel political regime. Imagine if the closest you could ever come to returning home was via Google Earth; for a Burmese exile, the internet is more than a modern convenience, it is a lifeline to a homeland. For Maung Maung Aye, an animator, chef and ex-Burma Student Army freedom fighter now living in Australia, it means even more – it is a portal into an intriguing world of romance and activism. Virtual Freedom is the charming story of one man in exile, but it is also the story of Burma, a country desperate to free itself from the clutches of a brutal military dictatorship.
